GPSR and CE marking are two of the most confused EU compliance terms among non-EU sellers. They are related but not the same, and mixing them up leads to gaps that get listings pulled.

CE Marking is product-category specific. It proves your product meets specific EU technical standards: electronics (RED), toys, PPE, machinery etc. It requires a Technical File and a Declaration of Conformity. Not every product needs it, only regulated categories.

GPSR applies to virtually all consumer products sold in the EU, regardless of category. It’s about general safety obligations: risk assessments, traceability, incident reporting, and crucially: having an EU Responsible Person whose details appear on the product and listing.

The key difference: CE marking proves your product is technically compliant. GPSR governs how you operate as a seller in the EU market.

Do you need both? If you sell electronics, toys, or other regulated categories: yes. If you sell outside those categories: GPSR still applies, CE marking likely doesn’t.
